Chris Thorman will leave his post as head coach of York City Knights at the end of the season to rejoin Huddersfield as assistant to Paul Anderson.
Thorman played for the Giants from 2005-08, captaining them in their Challenge Cup final defeat by St Helens at Twickenham in 2006, before going on to spend a season with Hull.
The 31-year-old had previously enjoyed stints with Sheffield Eagles, London Broncos and also Parramatta Eels in Australia.
He moved to York to take up a role as player/assistant-coach in 2010 and was then given the top job last winter following the departure of Dave Woods.
Thorman does have another season to run on his deal with the City Knights but the Championship club have not stood in his way after the opportunity came along to team up with Anderson at the Galpharm Stadium.
Knights general manager Ian Wilson said: "While we are disappointed to lose Chris, the opportunity to coach at the Giants is too good to turn down.
"When we signed Chris a position like this was always his longer term aim and it is pleasing that the club has been able to play such a key role in his development.
"We know that he will give us all he can for the remainder of the season and we wish him all the best for the future."
Anderson will step up from his current role of assistant when Australian Nathan Brown leaves to take up a three-year contract at St Helens in November.
