Wigan Warriors today announce the immediate signing of Scrum Half, Matty Smith, from Salford City Reds.
The 24 year old was originally looking to join Wigan on a Three-Year-Deal for Seasons 2013, 2014 and 2015 but, due to the current Wigan injury situation and the opportunity to compensate Salford somewhat for their development of the player who is out of contract at season end, Wigan looked into the possibility of signing Matty immediately. As a result, Wigan Warriors have paid Salford an undisclosed transfer fee to secure the early release of the player.
Matty made his England debut this week against the Exiles and has been in sensational form this season for Salford who, together with Head Coach, Phil Veivers, and Sean Long, have been praised for the entertaining brand of Rugby League that they play.
Head Coach Shaun Wane said:
"I have been a big admirer of Matty for a while. We are delighted to have secured his services and he is an excellent addition to our squad. From my early discussions with him, I knew that my coaching team could do things with him. He is very vocal and plays very directly and he will fit into our system with ease. "
Rugby Manager, Kris Radlinski added:
"Matty has a desire to improve and to win trophies. Wigan matches his ambitions. Our discussions were never about money, more how we could improve him and what he could bring to us. To secure him early is a massive coup for us as it enables him to work and learn from Brett Finch and Thomas Leuluai for the next four months which will bode well for 2013 and beyond. We would like to thank Salford for their co-operation and professionalism in the matter."
Matty Smith commented:
"This is a fantastic move for me and a wonderful opportunity. Wigan are a great Club with some excellent players and I am looking forward to hopefully playing my part in bringing more success in the months and years to come. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Salford and would like to thank everyone for making my period with the Reds so memorable."
Smith currently holds the record in Super League for consecutive appearances which currently stands at 76 games, Smith last missed a game for Salford in March 2010.
Matty will be given Squad Number 38 and will train with the Wigan squad on Saturday and will come into contention for Sunday's Super League game away to the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
