Hull KR captain Ben Galea on Thursday marked his 34th birthday by confirming he is to retire at the end of the Super League season.
The Australian forward joined the Robins from Wests Tigers in 2008 and has been a pivotal player for them ever since, making over 100 appearances.
He delayed retirement last year to sign a new deal at Craven Park and was willing to do the same again this time around, only for Rovers coach Craig Sandercock to deem his services were no longer required.
Galea's announcement comes two days after the club confirmed another long-serving player, Scott Murrell, would not be retained for 2013.
"Thanks everyone for your messages about retirement," he Tweeted. "It's been so amazing to play the game for this long. A huge thank you for all the support."
They are also facing a battle to keep hold of highly-rated half-back Blake Green who is attracting the interest of Wigan and is believed to be keen on a switch, while full-back Shannon McDonnell has already turned down a new deal.
