Wigan have dismissed renewed speculation linking England full-back Sam Tomkins with a move to Australia.
The 23-year-old Super League Man of Steel was reported in Australia to have made contact with NRL clubs over a move Down Under in 2014."He's an NRL player every day of the week," Sydney Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan told The Australian.
"He's one of half a dozen players over there that you would want in the NRL. He's elite. There will be 16 clubs interested in him."
It is thought Tomkins has received offers to follow older brother Joel into rugby union, but is more likely to join England team-mates James Graham, Gareth Widdop and Sam Burgess in the NRL at some stage of his career.
However, Tomkins signed a new five-year contract with the Warriors in November 2011 which included a clause preventing him from talking to NRL or rugby union clubs for the next three years.
Wigan coach Shaun Wane began to prepare for life after Tomkins when he experimented with the full-back position during his club's pre-season trial matches, but he insists the mercurial player will be with the club at least until the end of next season.
"As far as I'm concerned he's here for this year and he's here for next year," Wane told reporters at the club's Orrell training ground. "He's contracted here and I know he's very happy.
"I've had a chat with him. He came to me this morning and explained that there is some rubbish stories in Australia. He was very open about it. As far as I'm concerned, it's rubbish."
Tomkins broke off from Wigan's preparations for Friday's mouth-watering clash with Warrington to present a £4,000 cheque to Joining Jack, the charity set up by former Wigan player Andy Johnson after his son Jack was diagnosed with the currently untreatable muscle wasting disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
The donation came from sales of 2,012 limited-edition cans of Heinz BIG Soup "Beef, Tomkins & Onion" - commissioned by Heinz last October in honour of Tomkins being named 2012 Man of Steel.
"Having my face on a can of Heinz BIG Soup was not something I'd ever imagined happening and was certainly a surreal highlight of my 2012 season," Tomkins said.
"Hopefully this donation can go some way to helping Jack Johnson and the great work that Joining Jack does."
Meanwhile, Wane also played down speculation linking the Warriors with a move for Warrington's out-of-favour prop forward Paul Wood.
Wigan are currently short of forwards following the departure of Gareth Hock and injury to Epalahame Lauaki, Harrison Hansen and Chris Tuson, while Wood, who was a member of Warrington's Grand-Final team last October, was loaned out to Swinton for the opening week of the season.
Wane said: "Paul Wood is a good player. He's a Wigan lad and he's the sort of player I would have gone for but I've not heard if he's available.
"I'm not actively looking hard. If somebody pops out further on in the season, then we might bring someone in but it's not a priority."
Wane's priority is preparing his team for the DW Stadium derby with the Wolves and, with no new injury concerns, he is set to go with the team that began the season with a 42-0 win at Salford.
Wigan full-back Sam Tomkins has made contact with clubs in the NRL over a possible switch Down Under for next season, according to The Australian newspaper.
Tomkins, 23, is the reigning Super League Man of Steel and has also been linked with a lucrative switch to rugby union - his brother Joel joined Saracens at the end of 2011.
The Australian claims that representatives acting for Tomkins have been sounding out clubs, including Sydney Roosters.
He would join fellow England internationals James Graham, Gareth Widdop and Sam Burgess if he makes the move.
Tomkins signed a five-year deal with Wigan back in 2011, which included a clause that stated he could not speak to either rugby union or NRL clubs for three years.
The academy product, who scored five tries on his Warriors debut against Whitehaven in 2008, has scored 110 tries in 126 appearances for the club.
Wigan coach Shaun Wane was highly satisfied with his side's efforts as they opened their Super League campaign with a routine 42-0 win at Salford.
Sam Tomkins stole the headlines by scoring three of the Warriors eight tries in a commanding performance which flattened new Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash's welcoming.
Wigan lost some influential players over the winter in George Carmont, Brett Finch, Thomas Leuluai, Jeff Lima and Gareth Hock but Wane felt his players sent a good message to people writing them off.
He said: "I heard all those comments about us but I know we can play.
"That wasn't a complete performance - too many penalties and a little loose in contact. Once we fix that up we will be okay this year.
"It blew the cobwebs out. We had a few players a bit rusty but I'm happy with the performance.
"I knew it was going to be a test in the early period and all credit to them for sticking at it, but I thought we were quite good today."
Wane was also keen to make sure the praise was shared around even though it was inevitable Super League poster boy Tomkins would command most of the attention.
He said: "The front rowers were outstanding today. Sam is a great player and the work the middles (forwards) did was outstanding."
Five-goal Pat Richards, Matty Smith, Josh Charnley, Iain Thornley and Liam Farrell also touched down for Wigan, who despite encountering some early resistance, were never really threatened.
Salford coach Phil Veivers was not sparing in his criticism of his side despite accepting his the club's difficult winter had left his squad well short of being competitive.
The Reds were close to going out of business before Koukash's takeover was finalised this week.
Veivers said: "We didn't help ourselves throughout the game.
"In the first half we conceded two really poor tries.
"We came out in the second half and didn't get a lot of the ball.
"We were very poor with our skill levels, our execution of the skill and some decisions made defensively were poor.
"But I have always said we are probably three months behind every other club because we haven't had a pre-season.
"In that side were three bodies who haven't really trained with us.
"There might be some mitigating circumstances but at the end of the day you go on the field and you are able to make a tackle and pass a ball. That let us down tonight."
