Hull KR coach Craig Sandercock called for an apology from Steve Ganson after the official awarded bitter rivals Hull FC a match-winning try.
Rovers looked set for a point with just over two minutes left of the Magic Weekend clash when Chris Green gathered a Danny Houghton punt and scored under the posts.
Replays showed Green appeared offside when the ball was played but video referee Ganson, consulted by match referee Ben Thaler, awarded the decisive try.
The incident carried unfortunate shades of the first-ever Magic event at Cardiff in 2007 when Ganson awarded Leeds an illegal last-minute winner against Bradford, a decision for which he later apologised.
But Sandercock had no sympathy, saying: "We replayed it on our computer and I was giving instructions to go for a field goal (in the next set) as he (Green) was five metres offside.
"It's a tragedy and I will be disappointed if he doesn't come out and publicly apologise to our supporters and players.
"It's blatant. I was yelling instructions to go for the field goal and everyone in this room could see that. If they come out and say Greg Eden touched the ball... He was a million miles away. I expect the video referee to give an apology to our club.
"There are some very upset boys in our dressing room. For the team we fielded today to go to within a whisker of beating a pretty good Hull FC side, that would have been a wonderful achievement. I can can cop a forward pass, but I can't cop a video referee getting something so easy so wrong."
Sandercock would not have expected to get any sympathy from opposite number Peter Gentle and would have been right.
The Australian complained about decisions that went against his men in the same fixture last season which Rovers won with a similarly-dramatic late show.
"It sort of squares it up for last year," Gentle said. "You would need to talk to the referees. I'm not sure about the ruling, but we will take it.
"We played for about 10 minutes today and put our worst 80 together for some weeks. We were a rabble.
"The occasion got the better of us but credit to our guys; we kept the scoreboard within reach and thought that if we got one try we could get two.
"I told the players they should enjoy the win but they have a lot of work to do on Monday. We were a mile away from where we should be but the rugby league gods looked after us."
Wigan's Man of Steel, Sam Tomkins, later passed comment on Twitter, calling Ganson's decision "the worst I've ever seen".
