Catalan Dragons 30 Huddersfield Giants 14 match report

Louis Anderson and Leon Pryce

Catalan Dragons ended a run of five straight defeats with a 30-14 victory over Huddersfield in the South of France.

Catalan had not won since August 17 last year and had lost all five games in their worst start to a Super League season. But they were well worth their win as they ran in five tries against last season's table-toppers.

Louis Anderson played a starring role for Catalan with two tries and committed defence, but this was a team effort from the first minute to the last.

From the off, the Catalan forwards dominated their opponents - and they kept that up throughout the game.

Catalan opened the scoring on the quarter hour with Eloi Pelissier and Morgan Escare creating a gap for Zeb Taia to charge through to score down the left hand side, with Thomas Bosc adding the conversion.

The Dragons scored again four minutes later, Bosc's short ball to Louis Anderson saw the former Kiwi international charge over the Huddersfield try-line. Bosc's conversion doubled the lead.

Just after the half hour mark, a Bosc penalty increased the Catalan lead after Huddersfield infringed at the play the ball, leaving the half-time score at 14-0.

Five minutes after the break, Anderson scored the try of the game, Elliott Whitehead, Pelissier, Lopini Paea, Taia and Mathias Pala all involved as the ball was sent one way then the other before Anderson got his hands on the ball and dived over to score. Bosc converted.

The game was sealed on the hour, Pala breaking away down the left before passing inside to Escare - who dived over.

Huddersfield did come back into the game, Scott Grix scoring with 15 minutes remaining and Danny Brough converting to register the Giants' first points of the game and reduce the deficit to 24-6.

The Giants scored again without the Dragons touching the ball, Brough's long pass finding Brett Ferres, who powered his way over to score and narrow the hosts' lead further.

However, the nerves of the home supporters were eased with five minutes remaining when Whitehead pounced on Pelissier's kick through.

The Giants did have the last say, Jodie Broughton scoring in the left corner in the final moments of the game to take the final score to 30-14.
