Police have arrested two men suspected of assaulting Hull KR star Sean Gleeson, who remains in hospital with serious eye injuries.
The Rovers centre was punched several times in the face after an altercation with three men outside a bar in Wigan in the early hours of Sunday morning. Gleeson suffered serious injuries to his eye and eye socket and doctors fear he may lose his sight in one eye.
Greater Manchester Police have studied CCTV footage of the incident, and they confirmed that two men aged 21 and 24 were arrested on suspicion of assault. Both suspects were bailed until April 28 pending further inquiries as police continue to urge witnesses to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Peter Carletti said: "You might not have seen the actual attack but you may have seen a group of white men running away. "I would urge anyone who thinks they may know who is responsible to come forward and speak to us."
Anyone with information should call Wigan police on 0161 856 7259 / 7967 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. Gleeson has endured a number of injury problems since signing for Hull KR last year.
He previously played for Salford City Reds, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Widnes Vikings and Wigan Warriors while also representing Ireland at international level.
