Scottish World Cup squad announced

Danny Brough: Captains Scotland in World Cup

Gold Coast Titans' Irvine-born full-back Matt Russell is among six uncapped players named in Scotland's 23-man World Cup squad.

The 20-year-old made eight Super League appearances in 2012, six of them for Hull while on loan from Wigan, before moving to Australia and is one of four NRL-based players in coach Steve McCormack's squad.

The others are Brisbane Broncos scrum-half Peter Wallace, who is set to become the half-back partner for captain Danny Brough, Gold Coast prop Luke Douglas and North Queensland centre Kane Linnett but two others, Wests Tigers prop Keith Galloway and Newcastle Knights winger James McManus, are ruled out through injury.

Bradford utility player Danny Addy and Widnes prop Ben Kavanagh are the other new faces and among 10 Super League players, including twin brothers Adam and Jonathan Walker, but Scotland have suffered a blow with the withdrawal of Huddersfield centre Joe Wardle, who is to undergo shoulder surgery.

St Helens prop Alex Walmsley was also in line to make his Scotland debut before pulling out with a cracked rib.

There are three members of Sheffield Eagles' victorious Championship-winning team in hooker Andrew Henderson, prop Mitchell Stringer and second rower Alex Szostak

Scotland will go into camp on October 13 to prepare for a warm-up game against Papua New Guinea and their opening World Cup clash with Tonga at Workington's Derwent Park on Tuesday, October 29.

Scotland squad: Danny Addy (Bradford), Sam Barlow (Halifax), Danny Brough (Huddersfield, capt), Brett Carter (Workington), Luke Douglas (Gold Coast), Dale Ferguson (Huddersfield), Ben Fisher (London), Ian Henderson (Catalan Dragons), Ben Hellewell (Featherstone , Andrew Henderson (Sheffield), Alex Hurst (London), Ben Kavanagh (Widnes), Kane Linnett (North Queensland), Gareth Moore (Batley), Brett Phillips (Workington), Matt Russell (Gold Coast), David Scott (Featherstone), Mitchell Stringer (Sheffield), Alex Szostak (Sheffield), Adam Walker (Hull KR), Jonathan Walker (Castleford), Peter Wallace (Brisbane), Oliver Wilkes (Wakefield).
