Mitch Achurch: Brian McDermott backing the Australian to build upon last season

Leeds Rhinos head coach Brian McDermott is backing Mitch Achurch and Brad Singleton to make even greater strides in the 2014 Super League season.

Achurch joined the Rhinos last season from NRL outfit Penrith Panthers while Singleton broke into the first team following a loan spell with Hunslet Hawks.

McDermott has been impressed with what he has seen from Achurch in pre-season and he believes the Australian will go from strength to strength in the new campaign.

"It would be easy to expect too much too soon from Mitch when he came over from Australia however we have to remind ourselves how inexperienced he was at first team level," McDermott told the Yorkshire Post.

"Our relationship with Mitch was always seen as a long term one and he had only played 11 first grade games when he signed for us.

"His professionalism and determination to succeed have never been in doubt and he is looking a more settled player in pre-season and I am confident we will see more from him this season."

Singleton's form earned an end-of-season call-up to the England Knights squad and McDermott has been quick to remind everyone just how young the forward is.

McDermott added: "You forget how young Brad still is because he has been around the first team for so long. He only turned 21 at the end of last season."
