Steve McNamara named assistant coach at Sydney Roosters

England coach Steve McNamara is set to be named assistant coach at National Rugby League side Sydney Roosters.

The 42-year-old, who led England to the semi-finals of the 2013 World Cup, where they suffered a last-gasp defeat to New Zealand, will take up the position left by Paul Green, who left the Roosters to become head coach at North Queensland.

It is unclear whether McNamara will continue in his duties with the English national team after taking up his new post.

McNamara had been linked with a number of roles following his side's heart-breaking 20-18 loss to the Kiwis at Wembley, including NRL team Parramatta Eels and rugby union Premiership side Bath.

The former Bradford coach has been backed to continue with England by a number of the World Cup squad, including Sam Burgess, James Graham and captain Kevin Sinfield.

Last season, the Roosters won the NRL title under head coach Trent Robinson.

They are expected to make an official announcement regarding McNamara's appointment on Friday.
