Rugby League - Salford v Wakefield preview

Salford v Wakefield preview

New Wakefield signing Andy Yates is in line to make his first start when his side plays Salford on Sunday.

Wakefield announced the signing of Yates last month, but the prop has not yet featured for the Wildcats.

There is also possible game time for winger Richard Owen, who makes a return to the squad.

Missing out through injury are Danny Kirmond, Kevin Locke and Stuart Howarth. The severity of their respective injuries are unknown, with all three in danger of being ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Head coach Brian Smith is confident the rest of the squad can make up for the missing players.

“The boys have been able to have a good break to help them recover ready for what is going to be a very hard seven weeks," said Smith.

"They have been fully focussed and worked extremely hard in training this week to make sure we are prepared for Salford on Sunday.”

Meanwhile, Salford's acting head coach Ian Watson has announced that hooker Tommy Lee is ready for the Super 8s Qualifiers after four months out due to an injury sustained in the Red Devils' Easter Monday win over Wigan Warriors.

New loan signings Reni Maitua and Iain Thornley are both included in the team for the trip.

Lama Tasi, Weller Hauraki and Jordan Walne miss out due to injury but all are thought to be recovering in time to be ready for the encounter against Leigh Centurions next week while Theo Fages, Darrell Griffin and Liam Hood all miss out on selection.

It is the first run out for both sides in the newly formed Qualifiers, and as the two bottom sides at the end of 23 rounds of Super League, both will be looking to get ahead of a close rival in the next phase of the season.
