Halifax claimed their first win of The Qualifiers
Halifax beat Leigh 34-12 to claim their first win of The Qualifiers in a result that keeps both sides' hopes of promotion to Super League alive.
It may have taken five rounds to come, but Halifax’s first win in the Qualifiers was well worth waiting for.
Fax were the best team for the majority of the game as they put a massive dent in Leigh’s Super League aspirations. The hosts were 20-0 up at half-time after tries from Dane Manning, Ross Divorty and James Saltonstall.
All three tries were converted by Steve Tyrer, who also kicked a penalty goal on 30 minutes. Leigh fought back in the opening stages of the second half though. Two tries in three minutes got the ball rolling for Paul Rowley’s men, Adam Higson and Fuifui Moimoi were the try-scorers but the former had to leave the field after scoring due to an injury he sustained while touching down. But, despite their two tries,
Leigh’s momentum didn’t carry on throughout the half and it came to a complete halt when Halifax captain Scott Murrell crossed the whitewash following great handling from Adam Tangata and Mitch Cahalane.
Tyrer converted, and the goal-kicker turned into the try-scorer on the hour as the Fax centre made full use of good work by the forwards who laid the platform brilliantly. A penalty goal from Tyrer with ten minutes put the icing on top of Halifax’s cake.
