Chris Leatherbarrow has died at the age of just 27
Super League referee Chris Leatherbarrow has died at the age of 27.
The circumstances of his death have not been confirmed.
RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood said: "We are all truly shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Leatherbarrow's untimely death.
"This is a dreadful tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with Chris' family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time."
Leatherbarrow had progressed through the ranks to become a Super League official.
Fellow referee Richard Silverwood led the tributes on Twitter, saying: "Truly gutted. I'll never forget the week we had on our pre-season camp to Lanzarote. Gone too soon. RIP Chris x."
St Helens star Jon Wilkin tweeted: "So gutted to hear about Chris Leatherbarrow, a lovely guy who had genuine personality. RIP."
Warrington Wolves posted: "We are saddened to hear of the passing of Chris Leatherbarrow, a promising young referee. Out thoughts go to his family and friends. RIP."
