Kingstone Press Championship round-up

Swinton Lions beat Halifax at The Shay

Swinton and Oldham pulled off shock wins over high-flying opponents in the Kingstone Press Championship.

Winger Liam Marshall, playing on loan from Wigan, scored his fourth try of the match for Swinton in the last minute to give them a 38-35 victory over Halifax at The Shay.

Halifax were on course for a fourth straight win after romping into a 16-0 lead with early tries from Miles Greenwood, Sam Smeaton, and Jake Eccleston while Greenwood added a second before half-time and others came from Brandon Moore and Ben Kaye.

Steve Tyrer kicked his fifth goal and Halifax looked to have secured the points when a drop goal from Gareth Moore edged them 35-34 in front with five minutes to go but Marshall had the final say with his side's eighth try, adding to his earlier hat-trick and other efforts from Josh Barlow, Macauley Hallett, Chris Atkin and Shaun Robinson.

A late drop goal from Lewis Palfrey enabled Oldham to follow up their win over leaders Batley with a 21-20 triumph over Sheffield Eagles at Bower Fold. Two tries from Matty Fozard and others from Menzie Yere and Matt James, plus two goals from Cory Aston, looked to be enough for the Eagles as they built on a 12-6 interval lead.

Oldham kept in touch thanks to tries from Liam Johnson, Michael Ward and Kenny Hughes and Palfrey kicked a 72nd-minute penalty to add to his three conversions before landing the match-winning one-pointer two minutes from the end.

A first-half hat-trick of tries from Cory Paterson put Leigh on their way to a 60-6 win over Whitehaven at the Sports Village which enabled them to open up a three-point lead at the top of the table.

The Centurions led 36-0 at half-time and winger Liam Kay touched down twice after the break while Tom Armstrong, Jamie Acton, Ben Reynolds, Reni Maitua , Dane Weston and Liam Hood also scored tries and Martyn Ridyard kicked eight goals as the home side stretched their unbeaten run to 10 matches.

Former Warrington forward Glenn Riley scored Whitehaven's only try on the hour and Louis Jouffret added the goal.

Bradford bounced back from consecutive defeats with a resounding 52-18 win over Dewsbury, which enabled them to avenge their recent Challenge Cup defeat. Former Hull KR centre Kris Welham led the way with five of the Bulls' 10 tries, while another ex-Robin, winger Omari Caro, got two and others came from Lee Gaskell, Alex Mellor and James Clare.

Dewsbury had led 12-6 thanks to tries from Dalton Grant and Joel Farrell, both converted by former Bradford half-back Paul Sykes, but they conceded 46 points before Farrell went over for a second try a minute from the end.

London Broncos produced their best performance of the season to defeat Batley 32-8 at Ealing and leapfrog their opponents into second place.

The Broncos did not look back after Wales winger Rhys Williams scored two tries in the first six minutes. Other tries followed through Ben Hellewell, Eddie Battye, Elliot Kear, Mark Ioane and William Barthau, who also kicked two goals. Batley's only points came from a Dave Scott try and two goals from Pat Walker.

Workington remain rooted to the foot of the table after going down 52-6 at home to Featherstone.

John Davies and Ian Hardman scored two tries apiece and others came from Scott Turner, Danny Craven, Brad Knowles-Tagg, Jack Ormondroyd and Jamie Cording, while Kyran Johnson kicked eight goals. Brett Phillips scored the only try for Workington, who trailed 28-0 at half-time.
