Kris Welham is back with a bang

Kris Welham is back with a bang and hopes to carry on firing all the way to the World Cup.

Kris Welham back from injury

The Hull KR centre, 25, missed the final three months of last season after breaking his leg. He was on the verge of returning when he broke his wrist in a pre-season game last month.

But the England Knights star is now back and looks like he could be Rovers' lucky charm. They won only once in 10 games in his absence last season and lost their opening two this term without him.

But Rovers looked like a side reborn on Sunday, with Welham scoring one of eight tries in the 44-18 win over Widnes. "I was just praying I wouldn't get injured again, but everything went really well," he said.

"There was no reaction to my injury, I scored a try, we won really well and at home in front of our fans.

"The team hasn't been playing great and we'd had a bit of a telling off from our coachCraig Sandercock, so we all really wanted to get out there and do well." Rovers' record try-scorer was named in the 2011 Four Nations England squad before being dropped down to the Knights side.

Welham's hopes of breaking into the full side last year were ruined when he broke his leg in June. But Welham is determined to force England boss Steve McNamara to pick him for this year's World Cup.

He said: "Everyone would like to be in that squad, especially because the World Cup is in our own country. "I'd love to be involved but my main concern is playing really well for Rovers and then we'll see. It's a big year for everybody."

Rovers face whipping boys Salford away on Sunday but Welham said: "They haven't won yet but we cannot take anything for granted." Meanwhile, the controversial shoulder charge has been banned worldwide after a series of ugly incidents.

Salford's Theo Fages stopped breathing for eight minutes after a challenge from Julian Bousquet of Catalan Dragons.

Leeds' Zak Hardaker was crocked in another incident, leaving coach Brian McDermott saying: "When it does go wrong, you are going to kill somebody nearly." Australia and New Zealand had already banned shoulder charges and Super League is expected to fall in line from this weekend.
