Lee Briers playing for part-timers Swinton

Warrington stand-off Lee Briers will make his comeback from injury by playing for part-timers Swinton on Thursday.

The 34-year-old former Wales international has not played since hurting his neck in the Wolves' second match of the Super League season at Wigan in February.

Briers was given the all-clear to return three weeks ago and was set to play in the club's Tetley's Challenge Cup-tie at Keighley before he injured a calf muscle in training.

But he has now declared himself fit and has volunteered to play for Warrington's partner club Swinton in their Kingstone Press Championship match at Leigh Sports Village.

Briers will become the most high-profile Super League player to play in the Championship under the controversial dual-registration system which clubs can use following the decision to scrap the reserve-grade competition.

The stand-off, who has spent the last 17 seasons with Warrington, admits the decision to play for Swinton was a tough one. "It was my choice," he said. "I count myself as a one-club man and I thought 'can I really put another club jersey on?'

"That was the hard bit for me. But you get over that. That's just a bit of pride. "The main thing is that it's going to help get me back playing Super League. It's also helping Swinton out.

Briers could feature in Sunday's Super League clash with Huddersfield but a more realistic target for his next Warrington game is likely to be the fifth-round Cup-tie with Salford a week later. "I'll put my hand up for Sunday but I very much doubt that I'll play in that," he said.

"I've got a lot of work to do before that. I've not done much contact. I've not played for 12 weeks, all I am worried about is getting through this game and re-assess.

"But I'm ready to go. It's been like a pre-season for me. Since November, I've played one and a half games."
