SLXXI: Salford to investigate crowd trouble

Crowd violence marred Salford's 26-24 victory over Huddersfield on Monday

Salford have been forced to issue an apology after crowd violence marred the Red Devils' 26-24 Super League victory at Huddersfield on Monday.

Fighting appeared to break out in the away end of the John Smith's Stadium, close to where a number of Salford players' wives and children were situated.

Photographs posted on Twitter appeared to show winger Justin Carney and centre Junior S'au involved in heated exchanges with some of the travelling support after becoming concerned for the welfare of their families.

Salford issued a statement after the match apologising for the behaviour of their supporters.

"We'd like to apologise for the behaviour of some of our fans today," read the statement posted on the club's Twitter account. "We'll be working with @Giantsrl to find those involved. We do not condone any behaviour of the sort."

Salford's owner Marwan Koukash also released a statement and pledged to get to the bottom of the incident.

"I want to apologise to the Huddersfield Giants and to all the decent fans at the game today," he said. "We will work closely with the Giants and the RFL in our investigation and this minority of thugs responsible will be identified and dealt with by the club in the coming days. There is no place in Rugby League for them."

Commenting on Monday night, RFL chief executive Nigel Wood said: "We will conduct a full investigation into the events that took place in the away section of the crowd at the game between Huddersfield and Salford.

"We do not condone violence of any kind and will ensure that anyone found to have acted improperly is dealt with accordingly."
